Options expiration checklist

Use this checklist before holding an option into expiration or letting a short option remain open near the strike.

1. Contract: ticker, option type, strike, expiration, style, multiplier, and settlement type.
2. Position side: long right or short obligation.
3. Moneyness: in the money, at the money, out of the money, or close enough to move.
4. Liquidity: bid/ask spread, open interest, and whether closing is realistic.
5. Account capacity: shares, cash, margin, buying power, and concentration risk.
6. Instructions: broker cutoff, exercise/Do Not Exercise process, and documentation.
7. After-hours: whether late movement could change the practical outcome.
8. Plan: close, roll, exercise, submit instructions, or accept the obligation.
